Lotus Lantern Festival

Last night we went to the Lantern Parade in Jongno in the heart of downtown Seoul. It is run as part of the Lotus Lantern Festival leading up to Buddha's birthday on May 12. Thousands of performers in colourful traditional costumes paraded carrying basketball-sized lanterns while giant lanterns were driven on the backs of vehicles or pushed along as in the photo above.

Hi Phil. Looks like a really interesting event. Was the procession long? Leading to Jogyesa temple?

Hi murphy_jay. Yes, the parade went along Jongno Street winding up at the temple. We were near Insadong and the parade stretched for as far as the eye could see. It was amazing. Cheers...
